China: Apparently The UN Doesn’t Recognize Hong Kong As A Nations Say Mainland Lawyers

RTHK has   reported on the latest demonstration of how not to interpret international human rights treaties says a post to Law Profs Network..

A group of pro-Beijing lawyers said on Wednesday that calls for Hong Kong’s independence or self-determination contravene international laws.

They said the United Nations does not recognise Hong Kong as a nation, and there was no legal basis for any form of self-determination. They also said there was no question that Hong Kong will still belong to China after 2047.

Business and Professionals Alliance lawmaker, Priscilla Leung, who was among the lawyers, urged political groups advocating independence or self-determination to change their political platforms.

She said they were playing with fire, and the whole city will suffer if their notions change Beijing’s stance on the One Country, Two Systems principle.

Citing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Leung said those who advocate independence would not be able to hide behind the right to free speech if they are prosecuted.
