Seems eminently sensible to us
Your local authorities could be using Hikvision technology and your taxes funding genocide and the brutal oppression of the Tibetan people.
Hikvision, the world’s largest manufacturer of surveillance technology, plays a key part in the web of repression for the Tibetan people and can now be found all over the world.
Our research has revealed that over half of UK councils use the technology. Every camera could be a weapon in the hands of the CCP. But so many more remain undiscovered which is why we urgently need your help.
We are calling on the Foreign Secretary to stop the UK government from purchasing Hikvision equipment and ban Hikvision sales in the UK. We must tell the UK government to stop funding oppression!
Text of the petition:
Dear Secretary of State,
We the undersigned ask that you place an immediate ban on the purchase of any equipment manufactured by Hikvision (Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd), including under its many alternative brand names, by any local or national government entity, and to work towards the complete and permanent elimination of Hikvision equipment from the UK.
Hikvision is owned and controlled by the Chinese government and is used to further the persecution of the Tibetan and Uyghur people in the occupation of their countries by China. UK government purchases of Hikvision equipment means that British taxpayers are being used to legitimise oppression and genocide, and even worse, to potentially fund the Chinese government’s atrocities.
There are also significant security concerns about Hikvision around the world. In recent months, an investigation in Italy found that Hikvision cameras were communicating with servers in China and a critical vulnerability was identified which allowed unauthorised remote access to Hikvision cameras.
Government use of Hikvision equipment has already been banned in the USA and our own Ministry of Defence advises government departments against using Hikvision equipment. Despite this, at least three government departments – the Department for Work and Pensions, Department of Health and Social Care and the Ministry of Justice – currently have Hikvision equipment in operation.
We call on you to immediately stop the purchase of Hikvision equipment by any government body, to bring forward legislation to ban companies that enable oppression from the UK, and work to remove all Hikvision equipment from government buildings.
