Civil society groups, journalists, and legal organizations launched a campaign on Saturday demanding the release of lawyer Mohamed Ezzedine, who has been held by military intelligence in Port Sudan for exactly one year.
The campaign aims to highlight legal violations against civilians and activists, calling for the immediate release of Ezzedine, who was arrested by Special Action Forces on May 10, 2025.
In a statement, the organizers described Ezzedine’s case as a “glaring example” of legal abuse, citing unlawful arrest procedures, the fabrication of charges, and the misuse of criminal law to suppress dissent.
The groups pledged to use legal and media channels to exert peaceful pressure for his release, asserting that his detention violates both national laws and international human rights treaties ratified by Sudan.
The statement emphasized that Ezzedine’s case is part of a broader struggle to defend the rights gained during the December Revolution and to resist the return of state-sponsored repression under the guise of the law.
A lawyer, speaking to Sudan Tribune on condition of anonymity, said Ezzedine has been moved between several detention sites, including two months at a Special Action Forces facility and 18 days in a security cell, before being transferred to Port Sudan National Prison.
Despite the length of his detention, Ezzedine has not been brought to trial or presented before an independent judge, and his detention has been repeatedly renewed without legal justification.
The lawyer added that Ezzedine has been subjected to severe torture, including electric shocks and beatings, during his initial period of detention.
Ezzedine’s health has significantly deteriorated due to poor detention conditions and a lack of medical care. He suffers from diabetes and high cholesterol, conditions exacerbated by the reported physical abuse and medical neglect.
