We hope your 2025 is off to a good start! We’re delighted to share key highlights of the semester here at the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS). We’re thrilled to introduce Dean Alicia Ouellette and to welcome her to Lewis & Clark Law School! Dean Ouellette began her tenure at the start of the semester. Our Winter Newsletter also features: our recent animal law graduates; an award honoring Professor Joyce Tischler; the diverse animal law courses are students are taking this spring semester; the full schedule for this year’s annual Animal Law Week being held February 24-27th, as well as numerous upcoming animal law events on the horizon this spring.

At the start of the spring semester, Alicia Ouellette began her tenure as the Jordan D. Schnitzer Dean of Lewis & Clark Law School. We’re excited to be working with Dean Ouellete. We also extend our deepest thanks to Dean Jennifer Johnson (and Bruno!) and Interim Dean John Parry for their leadership and support of the Animal Law Program during their tenures. Association of American Law Schools Honors Professor Joyce Tischler

Professor of Practice Joyce Tischler was recently honored as the recipient of the 2025 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section on Animal Law – Award for Excellence in Animal Law: Scholarship-Teaching-Service. The Award recognizes law teachers who positively impact animals through the law, including through education, legislative advocacy, public initiatives, and other projects. Professor Tischler, widely known as the “Mother of Animal Law,” has dedicated her career to improving animals’ lives and advancing their protection through the legal system. Read more here. |

The Lewis & Clark Animal Legal Defense Fund Student Chapter has an impressive roster of events lined up for Lewis & Clark’s annual Animal Law Week! Being held this year February 24-27th, students will raise awareness and celebrate all things animal law. The week will conclude with a special evening on February 27th with local artists and award-winning photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur of We Animals. She teaches the course in our online advanced degree program, while Russ Mead teaches the course in our on-campus program. |

Animal Law Conference Call for Proposals | March 10 |

Do you have an awesome idea for an Animal Law Conference panel? Together with our co-presenters, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, we are seeking proposals for speakers for the 33rd annual Animal Law Conference. We invite proposals for individual presentations that appeal to law students, legal professionals, legal scholars, and general animal advocates. This event will feature keynote addresses, as well as presentations from LLM, MSL, PhD candidates, and post-doctoral research fellows from around the world working in the field of comparative animal law broadly understood.
