CALS NEWSLETTER | SPRING 2024

This past weekend was Lewis & Clark Law School’s commencement, and we’re thrilled to welcome our newest Animal Law JD, LLM, and MSL alumni into our community. Our spring graduates joined us from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia, the US, and Zimbabwe.

I’m delighted to share some highlights and other key updates, including this year’s JD Animal Law Leadership Award recipients, the Outstanding Animal Law LLM Graduate Award recipient, the work of one of our CALS Ambassadors, upcoming events, and more.

On behalf of all of us at CALS, thank you for being part of our mission of educating the next generation of animal law advocates and advancing animal protection through the law. And to our newest alumni, congratulations on your wonderful accomplishments. Given the talent and passion of our students and alumni, the future for animals is in good hands.

For the animals,

Pamela D. Byce
Assistant Dean and Executive Director
Center for Animal Law Studies

Happy Graduation!

Please join us in congratulating our JD, LLM and MSL animal law students who graduated over the weekend. They are ready to make an impact by advancing legal protections for animals and contributing to the development of animal law in their home countries of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia, the US, and Zimbabwe.

Please also congratulate this year’s Cornelius Honor Society members, including animal law certificate students and/or CALS clerks: Melissa Baines, Meghan Jones, Rianka Macwan, Allison Munk, and Emily Torres. Cornelius members are graduating students selected by the faculty and staff based on distinguished scholarship, leadership, and contribution to the law school community.

We’re pleased to highlight Melissa Baines, Kaiti Bestor, and Eric Sugarman who were selected to receive this year’s Animal Law JD Leadership Award! This merit award is given annually, when merited, to one or more graduating JD students who have demonstrated leadership in the animal law field and who have earned the respect of peers, faculty, and staff for advancing animal law and education.  Read here about Melissa, Kaiti, and Eric.

Outstanding Animal Law LLM Graduate Award

We’re pleased to announce that Dana Buchwald (‘24, US) has been selected as this year’s Outstanding Animal Law LLM Graduate! This merit award is given annually in memory of Florence Kaufelt, a lifelong friend of animals, to a graduate of our Animal Law LLM program. Dana produced exceptional academic work throughout her studies, graduating summa cum laude, while also being involved in many outreach and animal advocacy efforts during her studies. Read here about Dana.
