CALS (Center For Animal Law Studies) NEWSLETTER | SUMMER 2025

CALS NEWSLETTER | SUMMER 2025
We hope you have been having an enjoyable and restful summer! The 10-week summer courses at the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) have just concluded, and the fall semester is already around the corner.

Before we start the new academic year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past one by featuring some of the highlights in our 2024-25 Academic Year in Review! In this Summer Newsletter, we also feature the work of the Farmed Animal Protection Project, our Global Ambassador Program, legacy giving opportunities, and more.

Enjoy this final month of summer. As always, thank you for all that you do to support our mission at CALS and to create a brighter future for animals.

For the animals,

Pamela D. Byce
Assistant Dean and Executive Director

Helping Farmed Animals with
Student Innovation

The Farmed Animal Protection Project, led by Visiting Assistant Professor Hira Jaleel, is a unique experiential learning course that not only develops skills through hands-on work, but also advances farmed animal law and policy reform both in the United States and globally. Check out the impactful projects our students worked on this past academic year in this video interview of Professor Jaleel by Assistant Dean and CALS Executive Director, Pamela Byce.

Create a Legacy for Animals

August is national Make-a-Will Month. One important step is to include provisions for your companion animals in your estate plan. Additionally, the Animal Law Legacy Program offers resources and guidance for those who wish to support broader efforts to protect animals through a legacy giving. We would be honored if your estate plan included the Center for Animal Law Studies.

Through our Animal Law Legacy Program you can support our mission, help secure our future, and create a more compassionate world for animals.

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) was founded in 2008 with a mission to educate the next generation of animal law advocates and advance animal protection through the law. CALS has since developed into a world-renowned animal law epicenter, and our Alumni-in-Action are advancing legal protections and making a difference for animals around the world. CALS is a self-funded center within Lewis & Clark Law School operating under the Lewis & Clark College 501(c)(3) tax exemption, and is able to provide these educational opportunities through donations and grants.
