Brazil: Lawyer shot dead in front of office in Cuiabá

Renato Gomes Nery, 72 years old, was surprised by a shooter in front of his office. He was president of the Brazilian Bar Association – Seccional Mato Grosso (OAB-MT) and Federal advisor to the OAB, in the 1989 – 1991 administration.

Lawyer Renato Gomes Nery, aged 72, died as a result of gunshots suffered in front of the office where he worked on Avenida Fernando Corrêa, in Cuiabá, this Saturday (6).

In a statement, the National Criminal Law Association (Anacrim) lamented the lawyer’s death. “Dr. Renato dedicated his life to law and defending citizens’ rights. His leadership, integrity and commitment to justice leave an invaluable legacy for the legal profession in Mato Grosso and nationally.”

The Brazilian Bar Association of Mato Grosso (OAB-MT) also lamented the loss and expressed solidarity with the victim’s family.

According to the Military Police, around seven shots were fired at the lawyer, but only three shots hit him. He was rescued alive and underwent surgery in a private hospital in the capital. The lawyer was then admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but he succumbed to his injuries and died.

The OAB-MT informed that it is in contact with Public Security, following the first procedures in the case, and that it “awaits an immediate response from the competent authorities”.
