Although the various bar / law associations in India have an irrational fear of a liberalized legal market it looks as though partners at some of India’s bigger firms are realizing that it’s an inevitability and they’d better prepare themselves before the British & Americans come in.

Indian law firms hit the M&A route to take on global rivals


MUMBAI: On September 1, one of Mumbai?s top law firms, AZB & Partners, merged Bangalore?s real estate legal firm Anup S Shah with itself.

The transaction was followed by AZB?s takeover of a Delhi-based law firm owned by Ajay Bahl. In June, another Bangalore-based concern M&C Partners came under the fold of J Sagar & Associates, a top notch legal firm.

These deals reflect a growing trend of consolidation in the Indian legal space, as firms pool resources to bridge gaps in offering specialised skills and gear up for an eventual entry of big foreign law firms.
