The arrest of Chow Hang-tung, a barrister at Harcourt Chambers, came a day after a leading British judge announced that she will quit Hong Kong’s highest court next month.
An activist barrister in Hong Kong was arrested on the 32nd anniversary of Beijing’s crackdown on student protesters in Tiananmen Square.
Chow Hang-tung, 36, is vice-chairwoman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, the organizer of the city’s annual candlelight vigil Friday in memory of the victims of the crackdown. She was arrested in the morning on suspicion of promoting this year’s event, which was banned by police, who cited COVID-19 restrictions.
