The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) today strongly condemned an incident that occurred on January 30 in front of the Nugegoda Court Complex, where several Attorneys-at-Law appearing for an accused before the Magistrate’s Court of Nugegoda were allegedly assaulted.
According to the BASL, the lawyers were attacked by a group of individuals claiming to be the aggrieved parties in the relevant case.
The BASL expressed serious concern that, to date, the alleged perpetrators have not been arrested or produced before court.
In a letter addressed to Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya, the BASL has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
The BASL further requested that the relevant facts be promptly reported to the Magistrate’s Court.
The letter, signed by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena, emphasised that the incident is of grave concern as it obstructs the due process of law and poses a direct threat to the independent discharge of professional duties by Attorneys-at-Law. It warned that such acts set a dangerous precedent and directly undermine the administration of justice in the country.
The BASL reiterated that lawyers must be able to represent their clients without fear, intimidation or threat, and expressed its trust that all necessary steps will be taken by the authorities to ensure the safety and rights of members of the legal profession.
