The Supreme Court Bar Association on Wednesday suspended membership of senior lawyer Saifur Reza for reportedly making a ‘defamatory comment’ on Prophet Muhammad (SM) on a Facebook post of another lawyer of the court.
Saifur Reza made the comment on the timeline of Supreme Court lawyer Julhas Uddin Ahmad, who shared a post of SC lawyer Gazi Md Mohsin mentioning the names of the prophet’s 11 wives, said Mohsin.
The suspension of Reza’s membership, however, came in the wake of some lawyers’ protest on the bar association’s premises against the remark.
Mohsin said that he had also submitted a complaint to Shahbagh police station to record a case under the Digital Security Act against Saifur for defaming the prophet.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Mowdut Howlader said that the complaint would sent the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal today (Thursday) for direction regarding it would be accepted or not.
The association, later in an emergency general meeting with Md Momatazuddin Fakir in the chair, decided to suspend Reza’s membership, stating that further action would follow the constitution.
Saifur Reza refused to talk to New Age about his comment.
The protesters also ransacked Reza’s cubicle and vandalised his chair and his table there finding him absent in his room.
