The incident occurred as former DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam was taken to a prison cell

A lawyer has been assaulted in front of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court allegedly for chanting the slogan “Joy Bangla.”

Witnesses claimed that lawyers affiliated with the BNP were involved in the incident, which occurred on Thursday in front of the CMM court in Dhaka.

Several witnesses, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the lawyer, AZM Fariduzzaman, shouted “Joy Bangla” as former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam was being taken to a prison cell after a hearing.

At that moment, a group of pro-BNP lawyers reportedly attacked him. Other lawyers later rescued Fariduzzaman and took him away from the scene.

Meanwhile, Awami League-affiliated lawyer Morshed Hossain Shahin said he does not know who carried out the attack. “I heard about the attack; we were busy with case proceedings when it happened. I do not know who did it.

No statement was available from Fariduzzaman at the time of writing.
