Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) is a group within the Attorney-General’s Department. It is one of Australia’s most significant national legal services providers with offices in every capital city and approximately 320 lawyers who cover some 40 different areas of law related to government. AGS provides legal services through 3 national practice areas: AGS Commercial, AGS Dispute Resolution and the Office of General Counsel.

About the role
The library provides a highly valued service for legal research and resources to the lawyers within AGS and across the whole of the Attorney-General’s Department. The role of Librarian will involve delivering customer focused library services to AGS and department employees. Specifically, the Librarian duties will include acquisitions, collection and database maintenance, cataloguing and inter-library loans.

Additionally, the role will undertake other library activities relating to the production of current awareness services, the provision of information services and other library activities.

Candidates should have:

  • relevant tertiary qualifications in library studies / information management are highly desirable
  • demonstrated skills and experience using various computer applications, databases and electronic systems and demonstrated capacity to acquire new skills and knowledge as required
  • research skills and knowledge of legal materials and online legal resources
  • demonstrated high level of attention to detail
  • ability to work independently, prioritise competing tasks and be innovative
  • a willingness to take responsibility for tasks
  • well-developed written and oral communication skills.

Remuneration
This is a full-time position and will be offered on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis (non-ongoing opportunities will be offered for varying periods of up to 12 months as determined by business demands).

Salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant within the APS 5 level, AGS Legal Practice Support level depending on their skills and experience. The successful applicant will be covered by the Attorney General’s Department Enterprise Agreement 2016.
