Australian Financial Review: Lawyer billed client more than 30 hours a day in $10m fees dispute

It’s a hard days night when you work 8 days a week !

The impossible timesheets were because of “international travel” and “time zones”, Redenbach Legal claimed, but a judge found extensive overcharging.

We all have the same 24 hours – except for one creative Sydney solicitor who repeatedly invoiced his local council client for more than 30 hours of work in a single day.

The time-warping fees were charged by Redenbach Legal and its principal lawyer Keith Redenbach, a one-time Norton Rose Fulbright and Maddocks partner, whom the NSW Supreme Court last week found liable for extensive overcharging.

Keith Redenbach, principal at Redenbach Legal, has found himself in hot water for charging what a judge said were “impossible” fees.

Redenbach’s former client, Broken Hill City Council, brought the complaint after the law firm charged a gargantuan $10 million for its work on a building dispute that partly settled in the council’s favour for just $1.5 million.

On at least six days across 2018 and 2019, Keith Redenbach charged for more than 24 hours of work, including days with 31.12, 34.5 and even 36 hours of recorded time.

Across one stretch of three days, Redenbach charged for 103 hours’ worth of work, which Justice Elisabeth Peden noted was “impossible”.
