Australia’s biggest corporate law firms have marked government work as a key growth area for the next year amid the pandemic-inspired jump in state and Commonwealth spending.

Law firm CEOs told The Australian Financial Review Law Partnership Survey that stimulus programs and infrastructure projects spending was adding a sheen to what is an already rosy outlook for 2021-22.

The federal government spent $400 million on private legal advice in 2019-20 after firms filled out their regulatory and litigation teams on the back of the Hayne royal commission.

Norton Rose Fulbright managing partner Alison Deitz said the government was taking a more active role in a range of areas post-recession.

“We are seeing growing federal and state government mandates as governments play a larger role in our economic recovery,” Ms Deitz said.
