Australia: State of Victoria Has New Chief Justice

A new Chief Justice has been announced for the Victorian Supreme Court, with former solicitor Anne Ferguson set to take over from current top judge Marilyn Warren reports the Australian newspaper

Attorney-General Martin Pakula today announced Justice Ferguson, who currently sits on the Court of Appeal, would succeed Chief Justice Warren in the state’s highest judicial role in October.

She is the first solicitor to be appointed Victoria’s Chief Justice and the second woman in the role.

Justice Ferguson was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2010 and to the Court of Appeal in 2014.

Prior to her appointment as a judge, Justice Ferguson was a partner at law firm Allens Arthur Robinson, working in insolvency and commercial litigation.

As a solicitor, Justice Ferguson worked on high profile corporate cases, including the aftermath of Opes Prime’s collapse and the Pyramid Building Society.
