Australian Lawyers Weekly writes
NSW Law Society chief executive officer Sonja Stewart will resign just over three years after she commenced in the role.
The resignation was announced in a statement issued by the Law Society late on Thursday (5 October) and indicates Ms Stewart will resign “towards the end of this month”, but no specific date was given.
The Law Society said it “benefited greatly” from Ms Stewart’s expertise and passion and added her support in adopting modern governance reforms over the last few years was “invaluable”.
“The council of the Law Society thanks Ms Stewart for her service and contributions to the society and to the legal profession,” the statement read.
Ms Stewart did not comment.
Ms Stewart was at the helm of the Law Society during the pandemic and worked closely with courts and tribunals to continue delivering justice.
Among her achievements was a survey that found the “vast majority of changed processes in the sphere of litigation were considered to have had a positive impact overall”.
Ms Stewart was also responsible for a new membership strategy and new resources and programs for legal support and professional development.
She was also behind a campaign to raise awareness of the work of the legal profession in the Lawfully Explained campaign and podcast series.
Chief operating officer Kenneth Tickle will be the acting chief executive officer pending a recruitment process.
