Join our webinar on nature laws and how we can make them stronger.
The Morrison Government has introduced another new bill to reform our national nature laws.
It is not the reform we need to set up strong environmental standards and an independent regulator?to protect nature.
The bill joins another bill that was introduced last year that aims to hand off environmental powers to the states.
Together, as they are, they?don’t take environmental protection forward; in fact they weaken already weak laws.
But the bones of positive reform are there. The bill does give us?the foundation framework for national environmental standards?and an independent regulator to oversee decision-making that impacts the environment, two things we don’t have right now.
It’s the bare minimum the Government could have done to satisfy demands from federal crossbench Senators, who have been calling for a proper response to the?Review by Professor Graeme Samuel into our national nature laws.
But what we have now is a chance to?keep working to get stronger nature laws.
Another piece of news is that there will be a Senate Inquiry into the bill, and?that means there’s a better chance to amend it to give us stronger national standards and a proper independent regulator with teeth.
Australia’s birds need something better.
