We’ll put this in simply
AG Porter is under historical rape allegations and has stepped down for “mental health” reasons. The woman in question took her own life last year
The Australian Financial review reports that defamation lawyer Peter Bartlett has taken on Porter as a client – without going through the usual channels at the firm . The AFR writes
MinterEllison chief executive Annette Kimmitt wrote to all the firm’s employees on Wednesday saying that defamation lawyer Peter Bartlett had not advised the firm before taking a brief from Mr Porter.
Because she sent an email to staff apologizing apparently she is the one who is in trouble.
Welcome again to Australia
The clear implication that the firm may have refused to take on Mr Porter – and that Mr Bartlett had acted without authority – stunned many of the firm’s 247 partners and left some questioning Ms Kimmitt’s judgment.
They were annoyed that she had not contacted Mr Bartlett before sending the email and said she could face a “please explain” from the firm’s board. “She is being told her position is untenable,” said one
In her email, sent to all staff at 10.58am on Wednesday, the CEO said she “unfortunately” became aware that Mr Bartlett was acting for Mr Porter via Twitter and news reports.

We note this comment in the AFR article which refuses to highlight the gender of the “other law firm CEO’s” but we can guess
Other law firm CEOs also questioned the email. One said: “I think it’s extraordinary; we are lawyers, not political activists.”

Right-wing think-tank the Institute of Public Affairs railed against Ms Kimmitt. “If MinterEllison are going to play politics,” said institute director Daniel Wild, “there is a serious question about whether they can represent the interests of the Australian government and taxpayers.”
