Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) is a group within the Attorney-General’s Department. It is one of Australia’s largest national legal services providers with offices in every capital city and approximately 320 lawyers who cover some 40 different areas of law related to government. About the role
The library provides a highly valued service for legal research and resources to the lawyers within AGS and across the whole of the Attorney-General’s Department. One of the services provided by the library is the Attorney-General’s Information Service (AGIS), an index to Australian, New Zealand and Asian Pacific journals. While there is an emphasis on legal subjects (all aspects of the law are covered) in recent years AGIS has been expanding its coverage and includes articles on a range of non-legal issues. Over 300 journal titles are checked in the preparation of AGIS. Over 140 Australian and New Zealand journals are comprehensively indexed. AGIS also selectively abstracts and indexes major law journals from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The role of the AGIS indexer involves a range of functions to ensure that AGIS remains current and of high quality. These duties include reviewing and selecting journals for inclusion in AGIS, writing high quality abstracts of academic articles across a range of topics with an emphasis on legal journals and using the AGIS system to publish new articles. Additionally, the role will undertake other library activities relating to the production of AGIS and the provision of information services.
Candidates should have:
relevant tertiary qualifications in library studies / information management are highly desirable
relevant experience in indexing (or similar)
knowledge of legal materials to undertake reference work and train users
demonstrated high level of attention to detail
ability to work independently
demonstrated skills and experience using various computer applications, databases and electronic systems and demonstrated capacity to acquire new skills and knowledge as required
a willingness to take responsibility for tasks
well-developed written and oral communication skills.

Remuneration
This is a full-time position and will be offered on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis depending on operational requirements.
Salary will be negotiated with the successful applicant within the APS 6 range, depending on their skills and experience.
