The publican of the Norseman Hotel says the small West Australian community on the edge of the Nullarbor feels “vulnerable” to travellers who are not complying with quarantine rules.
Key points:
- Tracey Leanne Lawrence, 54, and John Paul Edwards, 49, entered WA on July 24 via the Eucla border checkpoint
- The couple were arrested on July 25 after breaching quarantine directions in the Goldfields town of Norseman
- They were fined $1,500 each and released after spending 15 days in custody
On Monday, a WA couple was fined $1,500 and released after spending 15 days in custody for failing to quarantine upon returning from a locked-down Victoria last month.
Tracey Leanne Lawrence, 54, and John Paul Edwards, 49, pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a direction under the Emergency Management Act.
The Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court heard the couple was permitted to stop overnight in Norseman before proceeding to Rockingham for a 14-day quarantine period.
The court was told that neither wore a mask as they spent nearly four hours eating pizza, drinking alcohol and interacting with others at the Norseman Hotel.
