Australia: Casino boss Matt Bekier says Star is ‘secretive and not transparent’

The Sydney Morning Herald writes..

Former Star boss Matt Bekier has acknowledged the casino repeatedly failed to manage risk and regulation, describing it as a “secretive and not transparent” company that followed the “letter of the law and not the spirit of the law”.

In a second day of evidence to the inquiry examining The Star’s casino licence, Bekier gave an unvarnished assessment of the conduct of senior staff, while denying he was made aware of reports of alleged money laundering or misleading correspondence being sent to banks.

Bekier, who resigned as chief executive amid revelations at the inquiry, said there was a good culture at The Star broadly, but gave a frank assessment of its engagement with the gaming regulator.

“We are secretive and not transparent, and we follow the letter of the law and not the spirit of the law.”

The inquiry is examining whether The Star is fit to hold its Sydney casino licence, and was triggered by a series of reports by this masthead last year.

On Tuesday it heard evidence Bekier personally approved a single high-roller to withdraw more than $22 million over three days without conducting anti-money laundering checks because it was not his job as chief executive.
