The firm has confirmed that increased demand for energy and resources legal expertise in Asia has prompted it to further expand.

Special Counsel Kate Axup will move to Beijing to take up a new role as the firm’s Beijing chief representative, accompanied by lawyer Tess Fitzgerald.

Axup and Fitzgerald will boost the firm’s existing energy and resources capability in North Asia, which has also seen the recent addition of senior associate John Koshy and lawyer Emma Wanchap, who are advising on major mining projects in Mongolia.

Meanwhile, Special Counsel Steve Potter and Lawyer Ainsley Reid have moved from Australia to join the firm’s energy and resources team in Singapore. The pair will be working alongside Partners Darren Murphy and Marae Ciantar, who are advising on a range of major projects, including floating LNG plants, and other oil, gas and mining projects.

International oil and gas specialist Anthony Patten is joining Allens’ leading oil and gas practice as a Partner in Perth in November, as the practice continues to grow.

Allens’ Head of Corporate and North Asia, Paul Quinn, said the moves are in response to growing demand for Allens’ energy and resources expertise in the Asia region.

‘We are advising on many of the headline projects in the region,’ Quinn said.

These include the recently-announced China exploration joint venture between Rio Tinto and Chinalco, the development of Mongolia’s largest resources project, the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine, and a number of major LNG projects including Inpex’s Ichthys and Masela projects, and another floating LNG project in Papua New Guinea.

“Given our long history of energy and resources expertise, and our on-the-ground capability, we are finding increasing demand for our services across the region,” Quinn said.

Allens ranks Tier 1 by Chambers for Asia Pacific Energy and Resources and the firm’s work on the joint venture between Rio Tinto and its largest shareholder, Chinese SOE Chinalco, on the Simandou iron ore project in West Africa was recently recognised with an industry award.
