Associate Director of Scholarly Publications UC Hastings San Francisco, CA

Classification: Level 5 / Class Code 6220 / Exempt / Part-Time / Benefited

Hiring Salary Range: $80,000 annually (but at $40,000 for 0.5 FTE) – commensurate with qualifications

THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general direction of and reporting to the Faculty Director of Scholarly Publications, the Associate Director, Scholarly Publications, O’Brien Center for Scholarly Publications, works in the following areas:

Journals: Manages, coordinates, and supervises the production and publication of the College’s journals, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, including Academic Regulations and Records Office credit award procedures. This work includes the following:

  • Managing and coordinating the administrative procedures and guidelines for the production and editing of journals.
  • Advising and directing journal editors and members in journals production and editorial operations.
  • Reviewing and analyzing printing bids, if needed.
  • Establishing department and journal budgets and tracking expenditures under the direction of the Faculty Director.
  • Coordinating with the Library to facilitate distribution, technology, circulation, and subscriptions.
  • Coordinating with the Library to support development and maintenance of physical archives and websites.
  • Coordinating with the Office of Information Technology to analyze and evaluate computer operations utilized for journals desktop publishing and production.
  • Supporting student editors in evaluating and editing submissions for publication when appropriate.
  • Supporting and assisting second-year journal members in the development and composition of their Student Notes when appropriate.

Student Writing Development and Support: Helps to train student editors to be more effective in their editing work and to raise the level of editing and writing in general. This work includes the following:

  • Assisting individual students to develop, support, and improve the editorial quality of notes and papers published in journals.
  • Providing instruction on basic writing skills and written examples of improvements and edits;
  • Receiving referrals from student journal note editors and faculty seminar instructors to help students with their journal notes.
  • Working collaboratively with faculty, the LRW department, the Legal Writing Resource Center, and the administration when appropriate.

Other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • JD or masters level degree.
  • Prior scholarly journal experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of publishing, contract, and copyright procedures.
  • Excellent writing and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage, coordinate, and supervise the timely production of various publications.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor law students.
  • Ability to operate and maintain the public-facing Scholarly Publications website and internal-facing informational website.
