Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law (located in Orlando, Florida) seeks an Associate Director Law Library and Head of Public Services to replace our recently promoted Associate Director. Barry Law is the only Dominican Law School in the United States and the first American Law School to be part of a university founded by religious women. Summary
This position is a full-time Law Library Faculty, Tenure Track position with both teaching and supervisory responsibilities. Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Information Services/Law Library Director, the Associate Director oversees the day-to-day operation of the Law Library, including: budget; personnel; procedures and policies. Also responsible for facilitating the smooth provision of services to the library patrons through both the Circulation and Reference Departments.
Essential Functions
Manages and mentors the staff in the Circulation and Reference functions on a day-to-day basis, recommends policy changes, and implements discussions concerning process and procedures needed based upon statistical analysis processes, including:
Analyzes current procedures and policies for the Public Services.
Makes recommendations to the Director and Department Heads for incorporating and adopting the best and most current library practices and procedures to include but not limited to: collection development, web site design and maintenance, blogs, wikis, social networking and any other emerging technologies, which facilitate better customer service to law students, faculty and the public.
Serves as the library liaison to Human Resources for hiring, training, supervising and evaluating personnel in the library.
Monitors the daily functioning of the library and recommends to the Director any policies or procedures which could be implemented or modified to assure that the library is meeting the needs of the students, faculty, staff and other library patrons.
Serves as the point of contact for design and content of the Law School Library Web Site, with assistance as needed from Department Heads.
Evaluates functions and policies of the Collection and Reference Departments, suggesting improvements in both day to day policy and procedures as well as the need for long-term training and goals for the librarians and other staff.
Reviews suggestions made by patrons either through the suggestion box, the web site, email or in person, and makes recommendations to the Library Director for improvements and changes to the workflow or policy.
Maintains reference statistics and reports.
Along with the Director and the Librarians, serves on the Collection Development team to constantly evaluate the library collection. Serves as a liaison to Faculty and Student Organizations to assure user input into the development of the library collection in all formats. Monitors class schedules, faculty research, as well as emerging technologies in order to constantly maintain the quality and quantity of materials the library purchases, within the scope of the allotted budget.
Performs other duties in support of the library by creating, updating and maintaining documentation and statistics, including:
Maintains the Law Library statistics regarding use of the collection, age of the collection and the functioning of the Public Services Department in making resources known and available to all patrons.
Maintains the documentation and institutional memory for the Law School Library reporting agencies, including but not limited to the American Bar Association, The Association of American Law Schools and the Governing Board of Barry University.
Monitors and suggests training and professional development for self and direct reports.
Monitors and improves the day to day function of the Public Services Department:
Orchestrates work and desk schedules for the reference librarians and assists the Access Services Manager with scheduling as needed.
Oversees in-house training sessions for staff as needed.
Qualifications/Requirements
JD and MLS required.
Five to eight years of substantial law library experience required, including progressively responsible law library administrative experience.
At least two years of supervisory experience required; three to five years supervisory experience preferred.
Ability to perform ongoing systems analysis of library workflow and service model and make recommendations, corrections and revisions.
Ability to use and train others to use all library audio-visual equipment, state of the art hardware and software and current library technology as well as monitor on-going changes and emerging technologies.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form with law school administrators, law library staff, faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends.
