Associate Director for Technical Services, Robert Crown Law Library Stanford University

Working under the supervision of the Library Director, the Associate Director for Technical Services provides vision, leadership, and management for the library’s acquisitions, cataloging, continuing resources, and digital projects staff; supports, recommends, and implements new initiatives and technologies for managing and processing print and electronic resources; collaborates with library staff in other law library departments and with Stanford University colleagues and maintains open communication channels; and actively participates on law library and/or University-wide teams.

Core Duties

The Associate Director for Technical Services oversees and/or directly manages a team currently consisting of three professional librarians and four staff members, which is responsible for acquiring and processing library materials in all formats to support faculty and student research and teaching. This position also hires, mentors, and retains staff; formulates, develops, implements, and documents necessary policies, procedures, and statistics; and provides expenditure reports in support of planning and monitoring for the library budget. As a senior member of the law library’s management team, the Associate Director for Technical Services participates in developing library policies and providing consultation for law library operations, as well as facilitating collaboration between law library and Stanford University Libraries with regard to technical services workflows and special projects.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent degree;

Demonstrated knowledge of library operations, including acquisitions, payments, cataloging, and serials processing with experience in one or more technical services department functions;

Demonstrated supervisory experience of full-time and other staff in a technical services department, preferably for six years or more;

Effective problem solving, analytical, and organizational skills;

Knowledge of the principles and practices of collection management, current collection development issues, and trends at academic and research libraries, including an understanding of emerging information technology and its applications for collection development;

Knowledge of current best practices and future trends in acquisitions procedures, current and future cataloging standards and data management technology, and serials and electronic resources management, including negotiation and licensing issues;

Demonstrated leadership qualities including strong interpersonal and public communication skills;

Knowledge and experience with library and information technologies related to technical services and proficiency with integrated library system(s), SirsiDynix Symphony strongly preferred;

Strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment; excellent organizational, time-management, and analytical skills; and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of successful budget management experience.

Experience working in a law library or with legal information resources.

Experience working with legal information vendors.

Working knowledge of a foreign language.

WORKING CONDITIONS

May work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
