Job Description
Job Summary
The Associate Editor position is a hybrid writer/editor position reporting to the Senior Editor of Crime, supporting the News editor, Crime, for generating crime stories/ coverage on PEOPLE.com and assisting with reporting efforts for the magazine.
Reporting responsibilities include interacting with law enforcement agencies, and reaching out to those impacted by crimes.
- Contribute to the reporting, writing or editing of about 10 stories per day, pitching stories daily and working with crime editor and digital deputy to assign them, assisting in the managing of staff writers and freelancers
-Assist in developing sources and long-term reporting initiatives
-Work with staff on People’s TV show and podcast to participate in segments on stories we’re covering
-Work with legal team on story review
-Provide backup editing, posting, assigning responsibilities for the News Editor, Crime when necessary
Looking for:
-A proven track record of creating content that drives traffic and engagement
-A strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask
-A strategic thinker who considers traffic and social analytics before making an editorial decision
-An idea generator who can think of new, fresh ways to package content
-Someone with excellent people skills
-Someone who has Experience with SEO, CMS, Photoshop, and Google Analytics
-Someone with Experience finding appropriate law enforcement agencies and reaching out quickly and professionally
-a candidate with Sound news judgment and knowledge of the PEOPLE brand
Essential Job Functions

Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements
Education:
BA or relevant work experience
Experience:
2-3 years min.
Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong writing, editing, and brainstorming skills, knowledge of analytics, SEO and audience engagement
