Assistant Librarian – Cataloguing Focus – Law

An opportunity for an Assistant Librarian with cataloguing experience has become available in a prestigious London based organisation that is extremely closely linked to the legal industry. This is a role that would suit someone who has some experience as a Librarian with some existing cataloguing skills, but equally it could be a role extremely well suited to someone that has recently obtained a Library focused qualification and would like to develop their skills in a legal setting. Please note that this role is one that will require one evening shift per week.

In this role the core responsibilities and objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • Around 60% of the role will be focused on cataloguing, managing special collections and rare books
  • Using SirsiDynix as a Library Management System for cataloguing
  • Responsibility for the cataloguing workflow, training others in cataloguing and ensuring established procedures and process are adhered to
  • The provision of a research and enquiry service and working on the enquiries desk as part of a rota
  • Responding to enquiries that relate to hard copy books, special collections, manuscripts and the use of online resources
  • Assisting with the management of the intranet and library section of the website. This includes the creation of new content
  • Assist with the organisations social media output from a library perspective
  • Act as the systems administrator for the Library Management System

Suitable candidates for this Assistant Librarian role will need the following:

  • Candidates aiming for the upper end of the salary banding will need to be experienced as a Librarian with demonstrable cataloguing skills
  • The role would also suit someone with a recent library qualification that can demonstrate an understanding of cataloguing and would want to build on a theoretical understanding
  • Strong communication skills. The role will require customer/stakeholder facing responsibility, training and occasional presentations
  • Highly developed organisational skills and a process driven approach to tasks are essential in this role
  • A strong level of IT proficiency, and in particular the ability to quickly learn new systems and processes
  • Experience working as a Law Librarian would be a distinct advantage, as would experience using AACR2 and MARC
