The Research Services Department of Arnold & Porter has opening for a Research Analyst in Brussels to join our energetic, creative, and global service team.

Under the direction of the firmwide Research Services management team, the Research Analyst responds to research and reference requests from attorneys, legal assistants and administrative personnel in all A&P offices and serves as a liaison to designated practice and industry groups. The Research Analyst also assists with current awareness monitoring, curated news preparation, collection development and maintenance, and other department activities.

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs reference and research services across a wide range of subject areas using a variety of print and electronic resources, including free and fee-based databases and web sites.
  • Supports all firm practice groups and serves as liaison for designated practice groups – including the antitrust/competition and life sciences practice groups in Brussels –  by offering targeted research, training, and product support in related subjects, industries, or types of research.
  • Assists with current awareness services by creating and maintaining targeted current awareness alerts and feeds.
  • Supports collection management of both print and digital resources, including advising on the library budget, ordering new purchases, auditing subscription renewals, vetting invoices, coordinating with cataloger, and maintaining the print collection.
  • Participates in collection development activities, reviewing resources, products and tools, making recommendations as appropriate, and promoting their use.
  • Helps plan, develop tools and documentation, and participate in orientation and training sessions.
  • Maintains awareness of new products, research tools and emerging technologies relevant to research services.
  • Actively participates in department and other internal firm meetings.
  • Promotes the services of the Research Services Department firm-wide.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A university degree in library and information science or a related degree along with a certificate or training in professional library skills and techniques from an accredited school.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience providing research and reference in a law library with law firm experience. Familiarity with EU Competition Law, Life Sciences and Privacy / Data Protection would be a strong plus.
  • Knowledge of research methodology and print and electronic resources and tools in the areas of law relevant to the firm’s practice with a focus on EU law, especially Competition and Life Sciences.
  • Demonstrated ability to make cost-effective use of a wide range of print and online resources, such as Westlaw, Lexis Advance, Bloomberg BNA, Wolters Kluwer, MLex, PaRR, and Concurrences, as well as a working knowledge of the official EU sites such as CURIA and Eur-Lex.
  • Familiarity with library and law firm technologies, including software and products used for communication, research and knowledge sharing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including business writing skills.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, creative and highly organized individual with strong attention to detail.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to analyze, evaluate and synthesize information from a variety of sources.
  • Strong client service and a positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Ability and desire to seek out challenges and capitalize on new opportunities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to forge relationships with management, colleagues and a diverse clientele.
  • Effective work habits, including the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities under deadlines.
  • An ability to read, speak, and understand English as well as working knowledge of another languages such as French, German and/or Dutch.
