| At the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS), we’re always looking for new ways to advance animal protection through the law, and today, we are delighted to announce a strategic global initiative to build capacity and drive systemic change for Africa’s animals: the Africa Animal Law Collaborative.
This new initiative between CALS and the Alliance for Human Animal Coexistence (AHAC) aims to cultivate, connect, and sustain a new generation of animal law leaders dedicated to protecting Africa’s animals. The Collaborative brings together AHAC’s strength as a bridge between African and North American institutions with CALS’ globally recognized academics, training, accomplished alumni network, and infrastructure. The Collaborative will advance comprehensive legal protections for all animals, including terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, companion animals, and farmed animals.
We are especially proud that two African partner nonprofits founded by Lewis & Clark Law School animal law alumni, Lawyers for Animal Protection Africa (LAPA) and Animal Law Reform South Africa (ALRSA), will serve as senior advisors and regional implementing partners. These organizations will ensure our programming is grounded in local priorities and legal realities.
To help train future leaders, the Collaborative also includes up to three full-tuition advanced degree animal law scholarships at Lewis & Clark Law School annually for advocates dedicated to advancing the interests of African animals. While applications for Fall 2026 are closed, applications are now open for Spring 2027.
