ALM Names Larry Selby to Head Online/Electronic Book Initiatives

ALM yesterday announced new executive hires and promotions in its Substantive Law Group, which? we are told “develops and markets attorney practice and workflow products”.

Larry Selby has been named to the new position of vice president, e-Products for the Substantive Law Group.

In addition, the company announced the promotion of Ron Spinner to publisher of Verdictsearch and ALM Experts, and the expansion of Edie Reinhardt?s responsibilities as associate publisher for Law Journal Press.

Here’s the press release in full . These announcements suggest to us that the days of Incisive management are offer and it’s time to welcome the new guard.

Selby will lead the initiative to convert all 130 LJP legal print titles to online formats, as well as development of second-generation online products from LJP and third-party content. These online products will offer users enhanced functionality including search; print from PDF; highlight and bookmark text; and export text to Word, as well as linking of all statute, case, and regulation citations to source documents. In later stages, online books will be used as building blocks to create practice products that combine licensed, newly commissioned, community-generated, and related ALM content.

He will also head acquisition of new licensed, partnered and commissioned content for e-publishing, as well as development of partnerships for co-development of e-book products.

Selby previously held a variety of senior management positions at Oxford University Press USA?s Law Division, most recently as vice president, business & product development. Prior to that, he was vice president of market planning for LexisNexis at Reed Elsevier and vice president, business & content development for thebankingchannel.com at Thomson Financial Media. He is also co-owner and co-publisher of Twelve Tables Press, an independent publisher of legal and social histories.

Selby received his bachelor?s degree from the University of Alberta and holds a law degree from the University of British Columbia School of Law. He will report to Tim Kennelty, vice president, product strategy and development for the Substantive Law Group.

Spinner, who previously served as business director for Verdictsearch and ALM Experts, will focus on development of new attorney workflow products and services for both businesses. This is expected to include expansion of Verdictsearch verdict reporting and analysis, and the shift of ALM Experts from a standalone directory to a broader interactive online community for experts and litigators. Spinner joined ALM as a financial analyst from Pricewaterhousecoopers (PwC) and Clifford Chance US. He will report to Sara Diamond, group vice president, Substantive Law.

Reinhardt will add responsibility for the LJP?s editorial and production groups to her existing roles overseeing new LJP book acquisitions, customer service and fulfillment. She also serves as publisher of the Law Journal Newsletter division. Reinhardt joined ALM as a book acquisitions editor from Rivkin Radler and West Publishing. She will continue to report to Diamond.
