Industry Moves: Twitter Finally Hires A Business Development Executive

Twitter has been ripped for not having more of a plan in place to make money. So how bad has the site neglected that side of the operation? Well, here’s one indication: Until now, the microsite has had no one on staff to sift through requests for partnerships. The company is now changing that. Yesterday, it announced in its blog that it had hired Kevin Thau to the newly created position of Director of Mobile Business Development—despite the title, Thau will be in charge of all business development for the site.

Before Thau, as co-founder Biz Stone noted —and this must have warmed the hearts of the site’s backers, who have collectively ponied up somewhere in the neighborhood of $22 million in funding for the company—there was no one in the company who dealt solely with business development, even though Twitter says it gets a “crushing” number of partnership offers. In the past, Twitter has said its options for generating additional revenues range from charging companies to reach its users, such as sending out coupons or promotions, to charging companies that want to use the site to gather feedback on their products, or display ads on its search engine. (Twitter makes some revenue through SMS deals with operators). Thau will also be working on the company’s mobile business strategy.

Thau joins from mobile start-up Buzzwire, which optimizes video content for the mobile web, where he was vice president of sales and business development. Before that, he was at mobile middleware provider Openwave (NSDQ: OPWV).
