A number of Afghan judges are to speak later this month at an event being held in Dublin to mark the 2023 Day of the Endangered Lawyer.
The event, on 24 January, is being hosted by the Bar of Ireland’s Human Rights Committee at the Gaffney Room in the Distillery Building, Church Street, Dublin 7.
It is part of an initiative being supported by the Association of Judges Ireland, the Bar of Ireland, the Law Society, and Irish Rule of Law International – the Afghan Justice Appeal.
Attendees will hear from Afghan judges living in Ireland, who will talk about their experiences of practising law in their home country.
Current situation
The event will also include an update on the work and ambitions of the Afghan Justice Appeal, as well as the current situation in Afghanistan.
In addition to the Afghan judges, the speakers will include:
- Ms Justice Tara Burns (President of the Association of Judges Ireland),
- Aoife O’Leary BL (chair, Bar of Ireland Human Rights Committee),
- Claire Callanan (co-ordinator of the Afghan Justice Appeal).
The event will take place in-person, from 4.30pm to 6pm, but there will also be remote access.
