DESCRIPTION:

The Pence Law Library at the American University Washington College of Law is the research home for a large and vibrant law school community. The Access Services Law Librarian manages all aspects of the Access Services Department, including circulation, course reserves, and interlibrary loan, and will supervise two full-time and up to thirty part-time employees.  This is a tenure-track position reporting to the Associate Dean for Library and Information Resources.

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the supervision and organization of the Access Services Department including supervising, hiring, training, and evaluating managers and part-time employees.
  • Proposes, implements, and reviews departmental policies and procedures. Produces well-written circulation and interlibrary loan policy documentation, and patron-related educational and marketing materials.
  • Maintains the circulation module of Sierra Integrated Library System and the OCLC WorldShare interlibrary loan system.
  • Manages circulation and interlibrary loan financial transactions. Compiles and reports statistics.
  • Maintains library hours, including ensuring that the library is opened and closed on time, that proper staffing is scheduled, and that delegated tasks are completed. Some evening and/or weekend hours may be required.
  • Develops, supervises and maintains course reserves in all formats, including ensuring copyright compliance when appropriate. Supervises all aspects of the reserve collection, including but not limited to selection, weeding, and maintenance of the collection.
  • Coordinates issues of equipment and facilities maintenance with the appropriate offices.
  • May supervise all aspects of stack and collection maintenance.
  • May teach legal research in the first-year Legal Rhetoric course, in substantive law classes, and in library presentations.
  • Provides reference assistance to students and faculty at least three hours each week as part of the regular reference desk rotation.
  • As part of the Collection Development Committee, reviews, analyzes and selects new and existing print and electronic resources.
  • Participates in the faculty liaison program, acting as liaison between library and assigned faculty members, offices, departments, and programs.
  • Helps maintain and promote the law school’s open access institutional repository.
  • Creates scholarship in either library-related or substantive law fields. Keeps abreast of developments in technology related to circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and scholarly endeavors.
  • Actively participates in the Washington College of Law and American University communities, as well as the profession of law librarianship.
  • Performs other library-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • J.D. from an ABA-approved institution and an M.L.S. (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution;
  • At least one year of professional experience in an academic or law library;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups;
  • Must have the ability to handle complex, analytical work, balance priorities, and meet deadlines;
  • The ability to produce scholarly work eligible for publication;
  • Knowledge and experience with standard research and office software tools;
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Sierra Integrated Library System circulation module;
  • Experience with OCLC WorldShare interlibrary loan software.
  • Familiarity with Digital Commons or other open access institutional repository software.
