The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is a public service project that provides technical assistance in support of legal reforms and the rule of law in over 50 countries around the world. ABA ROLI’s China Program has been in existence for over fifteen years and supports a variety of legal reform and legal training projects in mainland China, with a particular focus on issues of criminal justice, environmental protection, women’s rights, public interest law, and civil society.

Job Summary: ABA ROLI seeks a Program Officer based in Beijing, China. The Program Officer, working under the supervision of a Program Manager and/or the Country Director and Deputy Country Director, will develop, implement, and evaluate ABA ROLI’s rule of law programs in China. Competitive candidates will have a background in Chinese public policy and/or the Chinese legal system, experience working on international assistance programs in China, or have substantive experience in one or more of the program areas of criminal justice, environmental protection, or women’s rights. Travel within China is required as necessary for meetings and program activities. This is a full-time position, with a competitive salary and benefits package.

Qualifications:

Chinese law degree and/or a foreign J.D. or LL.M. degree, or an advanced degree in other relevant disciplines
at least 1-2 years of work experience
fluency in both spoken and written Chinese and English
excellent communication and organizational skills
strong knowledge of the Chinese legal system, as well as the current political and cultural context
a demonstrated commitment to public interest work
