AALL’s 104th Annual Meeting

The following information about the 104th annual AALL Annual Meeting has just been posted on the INT LAW lis and talks about the group’s funding for one international law librarian to attend

This year, the 104th AALL Annual Meeting will take place in Philadelphia, PA. Every summer, the FCIL Special Interest Section awards the FCIL Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians.? This grant provides financial assistance to one foreign law librarian to attend the AALL Annual Meeting.

As you may have already heard, this year’s recipient is Ms. Gloria Orrego Hoyos from the Universidad de San Andres in Argentina.? The entire FCIL community is excited to welcome Ms. Orrego Hoyos to this year’s meeting and we cordially invite you to her presentation entitled, “Never Again, Never Forget: The Role of Libraries and Archives in Reconstructing Memory of Argentina?s Dirty War.” We request that you take a moment to read about the significance of this grant and how you can be a part of contributing to its important legacy.?

Matching contributions from Ellen G. Schaffer and the AALL founded the FCIL Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians in 2000. Ellen, a long-time member of AALL and past Chair of the FCIL-SIS, envisioned and believed in the value of this international exchange and has been a persistent supporter since its inception. The grant has brought law librarians to our meeting from all over the world, including the Kyrgyz Republic, Ghana, the Philippines, Georgia, Egypt, China, Australia, and Afghanistan. Our most recent FCIL Schaffer Grant recipient was Ufuoma Lamikanra.? In 2010, Ufuoma traveled to the AALL Meeting from Nigeria where she serves as head of the Reader?s Services Section at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies at the University of Lagos.? Ufuoma?s experience is representative of the significant impact this grant has on the lives of foreign law librarians and their libraries.? She states, ?By working closely with the contacts that I have made at this conference, the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies library is working in close cooperation with a major U.S. legal publisher to preserve Nigerian legal materials, through their offer of free digitalization of our publications. Plans are on, and in the not too distant future, Nigerian legal materials and possibly some African legal materials will become more easily accessible to legal researchers on electronic legal databases.?? Please take a moment to read what past grant recipients have to say about their experiences and view the most recent presentations given by foreign law librarians at the Annual Meeting.

This grant provides an incredible opportunity for librarians attending AALL to learn first-hand from foreign law librarians about their country?s laws, legal systems, and librarianship, while at the same time providing the visiting librarians with the occasion to experience American law librarianship, learn about the American legal system, and to network with fellow professionals to create personal and professional connections.

The FCIL Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians Fundraising Committee invites you to consider contributing to this ongoing effort, so that fellow law librarians from around the world may continue to attend the annual AALL conference for years to come.? Contributions may be made securely through the AALL website where you may specifically allocate your gift to the FCIL Schaffer Grant:? https://secure.aallnet.org/giving_online.asp. If you prefer to make your donation by mail, please fill out the form and follow instructions at http://www.aallnet.org/about/giving_opportunities.pdf. Checks, together with completed forms, may be mailed to: AALL, 105 West Adams St., Suite 3300, Chicago, IL 60603.? Best wishes and with sincere thanks,
