Australia: Herbert Smith Freehills elects first female chair

City law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed its first female chair and unveiled plans to pay a one-off bonus to staff for their work during the pandemic. Rebecca Maslen-Stannage, who is one of the best known corporate lawyers in Australia, will become senior partner and new chair of the firm following a vote of its 470 partners. She will take on one of the two most senior jobs in the firm, which was created by a merger of UK-based Herbert Smith and Australian firm Freehills in 2012. Her role will involve chairing the firm’s global council of partners and working closely with chief executive Justin D’Agostino who is based in Hong Kong. Maslen-Stannage joined Freehills in 1994 as a graduate and worked as a litigator before moving into corporate law advising on M&A, equity capital markets and corporate governance.
