This is the senior role in the Sullivan & Worcester law library reporting to the firm’s Chief Operating Officer. The incumbent is a member of the administrative management team and is responsible for all aspects of library and knowledge management operations firm-wide to ensure that resources, services, and solutions align with and support the business objectives of the firm.
Duties and responsibilities
- Oversee firm-wide library and knowledge management operations, technologies, materials, policies, procedures, and services
- Design and oversee library systems and functions including collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, accounting, circulation, research/reference services, and inter-library loan activities
- Identify and recommend ways to create, share, and use knowledge, including prior work and accumulated expertise, in order to support the practice of law at and the business objectives of the firm
- Evaluate and compare content of print and online information products
- Monitor legal industry developments, innovative research technologies, and vendor products
- Negotiate contracts and pricing arrangements with information providers and maintain constructive vendor relationships
- Conduct legal and non-legal research using traditional, online, and internet resources
- Perform client and business development research
- Perform competitive intelligence research
- Disseminate timely information by monitoring online and print sources; maintain automated alerting services
- Develop, manage, and monitor department budget; maintain financial controls for department expenditures
- Responsible for recruitment, training, coaching, establishing priorities, and ongoing management of law library personnel
- Oversee creation of orientation materials and guides for library use and provide onboarding for new lawyers, paralegals and office administrators
- Provide and oversee training and assistance to library users and offer legal research support
- Anticipate needs and recommend technologies that are most effective for the firm
Qualifications
- Master’s of Library/Information Science or equivalent experience
- A minimum of 5 years law firm library experience with at least 3 years at a supervisory, management level
- Familiarity with principles of data organization and taxonomy
- Strong leadership and problem solving abilities
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong service orientation with desire and ability to enhance attorney productivity
- Proactive approach to developing solutions in anticipation of and in response to firm information needs
- Highly self-motivated, self-directed and attentive to detail
- Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks with the flexibility to respond to the scheduling needs of the legal team
