Ruth Bird Retires From Legal Librarianship

We are sad to announce that the Bodleian law librarian, Ruth Bird has retired.

In law library terms this, in our book at least, has the same effect as Mr Bowie leaving us in 2016

Over the years we have worked with Ruth Bird and have, like many others, learnt a great deal from her and are very sad to see her go.

Following is the announcement that Ruth sent out over the weekend.

We wish her the very very best for the future and look forward to hearing about her library NGO work

Ruth writes…

Dear friends and colleagues

I wanted to let you know that I will be retiring from my post at the Bodleian Law Library at the end of February, after 13  busy years. We have completed our major renovation project at last, and it seems like a good time to go, and leave new challenges for the next Bodleian Law Librarian. I leave behind a dedicated and wonderful team who will continue to provide great service in the interim until my successor is appointed.

The position has been advertised today at https://tinyurl.com/hr662vu . If it is of interest, please feel free to email any questions you may have.

I have been a law librarian for 29 years, in firms and in academia, after time as a teacher and teacher-librarian. I took a chance and left Australia to come to Oxford, and I can attest to this being a wonderful place to live and work.

I love our profession, I believe that there is a passion for sharing and teaching, together with altruism among librarians that is truly admirable. I will be continuing with some library related project work because I want to keep in touch with libraries.  It gives me such pleasure to continually see the faces of new librarians involved with our law library associations  – people giving of their own time and effort for the benefit of their colleagues.. long may it continue. (A great fillip in these days of seemingly increasing nastiness and narcissism..).

I might see some of you around the traps in the future, but I take the opportunity today of thanking every one with whom I have worked, shared a meal, had a drink, enjoyed a conference, visited a library … and made friends.

With warmest wishes for a successful future,

Ruth
