Designed to assist catalogers working with legal materials, Cataloging Legal Literature, 4th Edition (CLL4) is not a general self-help book for the beginning cataloger. One goal is to help the law cataloger deal with the ambiguities of 21st century cataloging. The authors’ intent is to supplement existing primary and secondary cataloging sources by discussing and examining cataloging practices for legal materials.

Both the print and online versions have been updated to the latest Resource Description and Access (RDA) standards, and the database will be updated quarterly to ensure users have access to the most current information. The book and database describe the authors’ understanding of current cataloging and classification practices for legal materials. Throughout the manual, illustrations of descriptive or subject cataloging and MARC tags are offered.

The Fourth Edition is divided into two parts:
- Part 1 covers the most common and troublesome legal publication questions regarding legal rules and uniform titles with an emphasis on electronic resources. The subject chapter contains many descriptive examples and cataloging recommendations, and also includes some examples of genre/form terms. It has a linked table of contents, making this material easy to browse. The contents are divided into 8 chapters with subchapters, including numerous links to other cataloging resources.
- Part 2 consists of an alphabetical listing of legal terms, genres, and subject headings with definitions, RDA cataloging instructions, LC subject and genre/form term guidance, classification tips, examples, and some historical information.
