Press Release: ALA “Libraries Transform:”

2016-17 ALA President Julie Todaro has launched Libraries Transform: The Expert in the Library, an initiative that will bring together ALA members with expertise in advocacy, management, and leadership to design a 21st-century human resources playbook. Marshalling teams from academic, public, school, and special libraries, The Expert in the Library will build on the success of the first year of the Association’s Libraries Transform public awareness campaign.

The future-driven human resources content—developed from a mix of existing materials and new materials—will be available for managers in all types and sizes of libraries on the Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment (HRDR) website at http://www.ala.org/offices/hrdr.

The playbook will include value statements; core competencies; job descriptions and job titles; competencies for multiple levels of positions; recommended competencies matched to training and continuing education; dispositions; a series of “What makes an expert?” questions that will be answered by patrons/users, managers and leaders, and other librarians; and content for background on and the use of measurement tools and library professional assessment. The ALA’s Libraries Transform campaign highlights the transformative nature of libraries and the critical role they play as dynamic centers for learning in the digital age. The focus is on what libraries do for and with people rather than what they have for people. The campaign covers all kinds of libraries—public, school, academic, and special—and their role in the various communities they serve and are part of. For more information, a toolkit with resources for participation, and an online trends center, please visit http://www.librariestransform.org.
