Malawi Law Soc Looking For Pre-Loved Tomes
Here's the note that's being posted on their behalf
Our colleagues at the Malawi Law Society would welcome a donation of books for their resource centre and, also, for a new resource centre they plan to build for their members in Lilongwe.
Their library is not only accessed by their own members but also by members of the judiciary due to a lack of materials within the court service.
If you or your organisations have any duplicate or good quality second-hand books that you would be willing to donate, please contact KatieHay@lawscot.org.uk.
Types of book
As Malawi law is based on English common law, books with English or UK-wide application would be most useful, such as:
- English commercial law, e.g. company law, intellectual property, contract, consumer, etc.
- Texts relating to the theory of law and jurisprudence
- Classic standard textbooks on common law topics which are of an enduring nature
- Case law reports, e.g. All ER
While the library is managed by the Malawi Law Society; due to an overall lack of resources, it is likely that it will be accessed by students, academics and members of the judiciary as well as the legal profession – particularly if the material is there to assist them.
Collection and shipping
I have been put in touch with a charity called Books Abroad, which is based in Aberdeenshire. They have confirmed that they would be able to deal with all of the logistics from collecting the books, if necessary, to arranging their transport and delivery to Malawi. Apparently they would be able to make a delivery either later this year or spring next year (I have yet to confirm exact dates). They have advised me that the books we collect would be palletised; approximately 500-700 books go on a pallet; and a container load could contain up to 50,000 books.
