Hein – Co Founder Dies

Ilene Nellie Hein, of Williamsville, who cofounded the Buffalo-based legal publisher William S. Hein and Co. with her husband, died Friday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. She was 92.
Born Ilene Lackemeyer in Buffalo, she was a 1938 graduate of Kenmore High School and a 1941 graduate of the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing.
She and her husband, William S. Hein Sr., who had worked for his uncle Fred O. Dennis, who published law books, founded William S. Hein &Co. in the basement of their home in 1961 and within a few years moved their company to a three-story building at 1285 Main St. The company publishes a variety of law books and other media used by universities and law firms around the world.
While her husband traveled the nation generating new business, Mrs. Hein managed many of the internal operations, including the editorial department and its highly regarded ?Hein?s Legal Periodical Checklist.? She continued to work on the checklist after she retired.
Her husband of 34 years died in 1976.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan H. McClinton and Bonnie L. Morton; a son, William S. Jr.; and a sister, Janet Lackemeyer.
A memorial service will be at 2p.m. Saturday in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Ave.
