Iran Summons Prominent Civil Rights Lawyer Over Posts on January Protests

Hassan Younesi, a defense attorney and civil activist, announced that he had been summoned to Branch 26 of the Tehran Islamic Revolutionary Court on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “publishing falsehoods.”

In a post published on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he stated that the summons was related to content he had posted on the platform following the events of January 8 and 9.

Younesi wrote: “I have been summoned to the Revolutionary Court to face charges of propaganda against the regime and publishing falsehoods, based on certain statements I wrote here after the events of January 8 and 9.”

Hassan Younesi, the son of Ali Younesi, who served as Minister of Intelligence during Mohammad Khatami’s presidency, is a defense lawyer who has represented individuals in numerous political and security cases in recent years, including the case of Navid Afkari.

He was previously arrested during the wave of detentions targeting civil activists amid the 2022 nationwide protests. In August 2025, he was also summoned to the Culture and Media Court on charges of “publishing falsehoods” and “propaganda against the regime.”

According to Hassan Younesi, the latest case was initiated following a complaint filed against him by a security agency.
