Ugandan human rights lawyer Sarah Bireete and Akina Mama wa Afrika Executive Director Eunice Musiime have reportedly been abducted, opposition leader Bobi Wine has claimed.
In a post on X on Sunday, Wine said the two lawyers were the latest victims of what he described as ongoing criminality in Uganda. He noted that the two civil society leaders were taken by the military and driven to an unknown destination.
“Two leading civil society leaders and distinguished lawyers, Dr Sarah Bireete and Eunice Musiime, are the latest victims of the ongoing criminality. They have been abducted by the military and driven off to an unknown destination. These are definitely tough times, but the tough people of Uganda will outlive them. Uganda will be free,” he wrote.
He described the alleged abduction as part of growing concerns over the treatment of civil society leaders in the country.
Bireete serves as the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance and has been involved in advocacy for constitutionalism and democratic governance in Uganda.
In December 2025, Bireete was arrested after raising questions over Uganda’s voter register ahead of the country’s January elections. She later spent nearly a month in detention before being released on bail.
