Aspen To Bring Supreme Court (USA) Cases To Life For Students

Seems like a sensible idea to us…

Aspen tell us that US  law students can now experience significant Supreme Court cases from the inside out in a new series of video documentaries, Aspen Voices of Law,

They write in their release…

“Law students read hundreds of Supreme Court opinions without ever seeing or hearing from a party or the lawyers that shaped and defined the case,” noted Professor Thomas Metzloff at Duke University School of Law, who produced Aspen Voices of Law.  “These documentaries provide a window of insight and understanding into the forces that shaped the dispute. The documentaries are meant to support and enliven the case method.”

Aspen Voices of Law chronicles a number of high-profile constitutional law cases that rose to the Supreme Court. Each 20-minute documentary features the actual plaintiffs, lawyers, and often judges involved in the dispute to provide the viewer with a personal and real account of the important facts, as well as the broader social context extending beyond the specific legal issues addressed in the case.

Documentaries include:

  • BMW of North America v. Gore
  • Board of Education v. Earls
  • Gentile v. State Bar of Nevada
  • Grutter v. Bollinger
  • Heller v.Washington, D.C.
  • Kelo v. New London
  • Lee v.Weisman
  • Leegin v. PSKS, Inc.

“Aspen Voices of Law brings both our Casebooks and these cases to life, offering insights in how remarkable landmark cases start humbly and involve all facets of legal training,” says Steve Errick, Aspen Publishers Legal Education Managing Director.

Access to the video documentaries is free to adopters of any qualifying Aspen Publishers casebook and directly to purchasers of a new casebook.  Many of the cases are accompanied by teachers’ materials and student viewing guides. Court documents related to the case, as well as photos of evidence, maps of sites and other case-specific resources are also available online.
