Lumbee Tribal Council advances plan for vote on whether to allow gaming

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) — The Lumbee Tribal Council advanced plans Thursday night to possibly pursue gaming, voting in favor of a constitutional amendment that would allow citizens to vote on the issue.

The decision during a council business meeting means the Lumbee Elections Board can now set an election date for the vote. In the meantime, Tribal Chairman John Lowery will begin working with the council to provide educational resources about the 1988 federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and share a draft revenue allocation plan.

“This will help outline the federal guidelines that govern tribal gaming and explain how revenues could be allocated to benefit the Lumbee people,” the tribe said in a Facebook post.

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act created three classes of gaming managed by the National Indian Gaming Commission. Class I games are social games with minimal prizes or traditional ceremonial games. They are regulated solely by tribes.
