Google AI because the Telegraph is behind a paywall
In a claim issued in the High Court in March 2026, the London law firm Wordsmith Law sued an Edinburgh-based artificial intelligence company, Wordsmith AI, over the use of their identical namesake.
The law firm, which generated £1m in turnover last year, alleges that the AI company’s name has caused significant confusion among clients and the public. Key details from the legal action include:
- Evidence of Confusion: Partners at Wordsmith Law reported receiving inquiries from clients asking if they were the same company.
- Fundraising Misunderstandings: A client and a partner at another prominent firm mistakenly congratulated Wordsmith Law on raising £25 million, a sum actually raised by the AI startup.
- Trademark Detriment: The firm claims the AI company’s use of the name is detrimental to their established trademark.

This case follows a growing trend of legal friction between traditional legal practitioners and “robot” or AI services, such as the 2023 class action against DoNotPay for practicing law without a license.
