Global human rights body, the Amnesty International has expressed concern over relentless harassment and intimidation of a Kano-based lawyer, Muhuyi Magaji RiminGado, who investigated allegations of widespread corruption linked to the previous administration in Kano State.
RiminGado was the immediate past chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti?Corruption Commission (PCACC).
In a statement released Saturday on its X (formerly Twitter) account, the human rights organisation said the lawyer was forcefully arrested by a truckload of heavily armed police officers allegedly acting on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The organisation warned that such actions signal a shrinking civic space and a dangerous escalation in the misuse of security forces for political ends.
“A lawyer who investigated allegations of widespread corruption by the previous government of Kano state is being repeatedly harassed and intimidated by the police. A truckload of heavily armed police arrested him today on the orders of IGP.”
Muhuyi Magaji RiminGado was reported to be arrested by heavily armed officers who stormed his law firm in Kano, on Friday.
Lawyer Ridwan Zakariyya, who witnessed the incident, said the former PCACC boss was later transported to the Kano command headquarters in Bompai.
According to him, the officers identified themselves as members of the Inspector?General of Police (IGP) Squad from Abuja.
