UK Law Student Dies In Hit & Run Accident

A law student has died after being hit by a car in the early hours of Sunday.

Abigail Eggleston (22) was studying law at Durham University. She was hit by a car on Sunday morning, when crossing the A167 at Neville’s Cross, Durham. She was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, but passed away a short time later.

Abigail’s family have paid tribute to “a much loved and treasured daughter, sister, granddaughter, and girlfriend.”

They said: “You were on track to conquer the world, studying hard for your law degree and having fun discovering the world.”

“You have been cruelly snatched from us much too soon darling, a great hole has been left in your place and life can never be the same again without you,” and described her as “a beautiful, kind, strong go-getter” who was a “constant ray of sunshine always looking on the bright side of life”.

The Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, Karen O’Brien, said Abigail’s death came as a “shock to our whole University community, and particularly those who were close to her.”

“She was a talented, kind, committed student, and a popular member of John Snow College,” said O’Brien, who “contributed actively to College life and was a member of the executive of the Disability Support Society.”

Durham police said a man has appeared in court this week, charged with causing death by dangerous driving, perverting the course of justice, driving with no insurance, and failing to stop after a collision.

In a statement, Durham Police thanked the community for their assistance with the investigation, and that it “has been a truly harrowing incident for everyone involved”.
